Hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and the BMA recommend hypnotherapy to alleviate IBS symptoms. Some NHS departments are now set up just for Hypnosis for IBS.
It is a uniquely comfortable form of treatment; relaxing, easy and generally enjoyable.
It utilizes the healing power of the person’s own mind and is generally without negative side effects.
The treatment sometimes results in improvement in other problems such as migraine or tension headaches, along with the improvement in IBS symptoms.
The beneficial effects of the treatment last long after the end of the course of treatment. According to research, individuals who improve from Hypnosis IBS can generally look forward to years of reduced uncomfortable bowel symptoms.
71% of patients responded well
More than 200 patients with IBS were monitored after undergoing gut-directed hypnotherapy, each recording their symptoms, quality of life and levels of anxiety and stress before and after treatment.
The researchers found that almost three-quarters (71%) of patients responded well to hypnotherapy and most did not deteriorate over time.
They concluded that “the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years”, making it “a viable therapeutic option” for treating IBS.The research is published in the journal Gut.
9 out of 10 reduced symptoms
The research evidence shows that hypnotherapy could help sufferers of IBS
In cases referred for hypnotherapy, symptoms stopped completely in four in ten cases with typical IBS.
In a further five in ten cases patients reported feeling more in control of their symptoms and were therefore much less troubled by them.
